- Muster Rolls of Volunteer Organizations During the War with Northwest Indians, 1790 - 1795 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains muster rolls for volunteer organizations which had service in the Indian War on the Northwestern frontier commonly called "Wayne's War," including rolls for organizations from Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Territory South of the Ohio, together with those of the United States Levies, Rangers, and Scouts and Spies.

- Muster Rolls of Volunteer Organizations In Various Indian Wars and Other Incidents Requiring the Employment of Troops, 1794 - 1858 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains muster rolls for volunteer organizations which had service in the Black Hawk War, 1831-32; the Whiskey Insurrection in Pennsylvania, 1794; the Patriot War, 1838-39; and other events. There are very few rolls on file for organizations participating in any of these conflicts.
- Muster Rolls of Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War, Mexican War, Creek War, Cherokee Removal, and Other Wars, 1836 - 1866 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains muster rolls, returns, and regimental papers for Volunteer organizations participating in the Civil War, Mexican War, Creek War, and Cherokee Removal. Rolls for various minor wars are also included. It contains rolls for units with State designations, Veteran Reserve Corps, U.S. Volunteers, U.S. Colored Troops, deserters, detachments, and the Hospital Corps.
- Regimental and Company Books of Mexican War Volunteer Organizations, 1846 - 1848 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) - This series consists of order books, descriptive books, registers of letters received, letters sent books, and morning reports for volunteer regiments and companies that served in the Mexican War. The extant books for each organization vary.
- Regimental and Company Books of Civil War Volunteer Union Organizations, 1861 - 1867 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series consists of regimental and company record books kept by Union Volunteer units in the field during the Civil War. Included are letter books, order books, descriptive books, and morning reports. The series also includes such regimental and company records as clothing books, guard reports, account books, sick reports, court-martial books, and books concerning furloughs and absences. The extant books for each organization vary.
- Confederate Muster and Pay Rolls in the War Department Collection of Confederate Records (Record Group 109) - This series consists of a large collection of Confederate Army muster and payrolls. These rolls were captured by Union forces or surrendered by Confederate forces or officers during and at the end of the Civil War; or were donated to, or purchased by, the Federal Government after the Civil War.
- Duplicate Copies of Muster and Descriptive Rolls of Volunteer Organizations, 1864 - 1865 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains duplicate Union muster-in and muster-out rolls for service during the Civil War. Also included are volunteer descriptive lists and accounts of pay and clothing.
- Retained Copies of Muster Rolls, ca. 1860 - ca. 1912 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains copies of muster rolls from various units between 1860 and 1912. Many rolls from the Civil War era are from Benton Barracks, Missouri, and from Columbus, Ohio. Many are also for the Veterans Reserve Corps. The rest of the rolls primarily postdate 1900 and are for clerks, messengers, engineers, and other staff. A number of Civil War-era morning reports are also included in this series.

The extant books for each organization vary.
- Muster Rolls of the Puerto Rico Regiment, 1899 - 1901 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains muster rolls, returns and regimental papers for the Puerto Rico regiment that was organized for service in the Philippine Insurrection but remained in Puerto Rico.
- Regimental and Company Books of the Puerto Rico Regiment, 1899 - 1901 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series consists of order books, descriptive books, registers of letters received, letters sent books, and morning reports for the Puerto Rico regiment which was organized for service in the Philippine Insurrection but remained in Puerto Rico.
- Copies of Muster Rolls, 1900 - 1910 i n the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series contains muster rolls of a detachment, infantry regiments, cavalry regiments, the hospital corps, and various headquarters and battalions of the Regular Army.
- Returns of Military Organizations, ca. 1800 - 12/1916 i n the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series consists of monthly returns of Regular Army organizations sent in to the Adjutant General's Office, showing stations of companies and names of officers commanding the different companies; number of absent noncommissioned officers, musicians, artificers, privates, and matrosses; statistical information relating to numbers present for duty, absent, sick, in arrest or confinement, and the like; names of all the officers attached to the different companies of the regiment; and significant remarks.
- Returns of Military Posts, ca. 1800 - 12/1916 i n the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) - This series consists of monthly returns and related papers of military posts, camps, and stations sent to the Adjutant General's Office by orders of the War Department. The returns show the units stationed at a particular post and their strength, the names and duties of officers, the number of officers present and absent, a listing of official communications received, and a record of events. Authority for detached service and other absences are often noted. The related papers include morning reports, field returns, rosters of officers and other papers concerning the movement of troops, or the battles or skirmishes in which they participated. Also included are papers containing historical information relating to the establishment and abandonment of the post.

Rosters for units serving in World War II from 1944 - 1946 were destroyed in accordance with Army disposition authorities.
Morning reports for Army units dated 1960 - September 1974 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis. To order these records, please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002.
The semi-annual rosters (i.e., April and October) for 1960-74 for Army units are attached to the morning reports of the respective units. All rosters for the period are not available and usually list only enlisted personnel. Paper copies may be obtained from microfilm by writing to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. Research and reproduction fees are charged for this service. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 to request this information.
October 1974 - November 1990
In October 1974, the Army Standard Installation Division Personnel System (SIDPERS) included Personnel Data Cards (PDC) that replaced Morning Reports and Zero Strength Balance Reports (ZSBR) that replaced rosters. A SIDPERS contains information on the service member during the entire period of time assigned to an organization, regardless of length of time. It also includes information about TDY, AWOL, DEF, gains, losses, promotions, reductions. SIDPERS was discontinued on November 21, 1990. For a copy of a SIDPERS record, please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), Military Personnel Records, 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002.

1984 to Present
Navy personnel diaries (also known as muster rolls) after 1983 are in the custody of the Navy Personnel Command (PERS-00J6), 5720 Integrity Drive, Millington, TN 38055. These provide a listing of anyone who reported on-board each day, anyone who left, anyone who did not report, and anyone who reenlisted. They also include copies of the Officer Distribution Control Report (ODCR) and the Enlisted Distribution Verification Report (EDVR). Individuals are listed by name, rank/rate and social security number. Muster rolls/Personnel Diaries from 1984 onward utilize social security numbers as service numbers and are subject to privacy restrictions. Air Force
Morning reports for Army Air Force units (from November 1, 1912 to August 1947) and Air Force units (from September 1947 to June 30, 1966) are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL). The U.S. Air Force discontinued the Morning Report (AF Form 183) on June 30, 1966. It was replaced by a machine reporting system, the Military Strength Balance Report (AFHRA Call Number K381.24, Jan-Jun 1966, IRIS Number 498836). Additionally, another report, Average Strength Data Report, Reports Control Symbol (RCS) AF-P185 was also required. Neither report has been accessioned into the custody of the National Archives. Please contact the Air Force Historical Research Agency for access to these reports.
